Notes

Caleb Lemley

In the spring of 1857, Caleb and Ellen Lemley migrated by covered wagon to Dutch Creek Township, Washington County, Iowa, and settled on a farm a mile and a quarter west of Gracehill, Iowa. Their third child, Eliza Ann, died on the way to Iowa. With them on this trip was Ellen's young sister and brother, Rachel and Frank Lape. About October 1, 1891, Mr. and Mrs. Lemley went to Afton, Kansas, to visit their son William. On the way home Mr. Lemley became ill near Kansas City on October 12. His condition worsened and when he reached Ollie, Iowa, doctors were consulted. Strangulated hernia was diagnosed and no hope given. He died October 26, 1891. Burial was in Bethel Church Cemetery. The body was later removed to Elm Grove in Washington, Iowa. Mrs. Lemley moved to Washington.
